Ages 2-8
Children’s main form of communication is play, so in therapy, we use play to help them process through struggles, trauma, behavioral issues, or other troubles.
The participation of the parent/caregiver during therapy in this age range is critical to the process.
Ages 9-12
Children/adolescents during this stage will still focus on play or games to help them process, but because they will be more verbal, parental/caregiver participation may be less necessary.
This is such a tough age! There are many changes that happen during this time of life and sometimes adolescents just need some extra support. If you’re a teen who is struggling emotionally, this might be a great fit for you!
Our approach to family counseling generally includes one or more members of a family. Parents and children of all ages may engage in play, art, experiential activities or constructive guided discussions to increase understanding and discover new ways of relating to each other. Sometimes adult members of a family participate in counseling to address and resolve relationship problems or work to recover from past hurt and resentment.
Parenting can be a tough job! But don’t worry! We’re here to help. In this type of counseling, parents will learn techniques depending on the current struggles. This may include discipline, consistency, boundaries, how to have fun with your kids again, or something else!
Each of us has a story. At Empowered Through Play, LLC we provide individual counseling to engage that story and help you gain a better understanding of self and relationships, leading to a more fulfilling future. During life, we may battle through a maze of emotions, along with our own inner struggles. The weight of our current life stressors, the shadows of insecurity of self, and/or the scars of past pain—they're all part of the story, but they don't have to define who we are. Our licensed therapists provide guidance and support to help you develop coping skills to reduce stress and anxiety and improve your overall well-being.
Animal Assisted Play Therapy (AAPT) is a full integration of play therapy with animal-assisted therapy, primarily for mental health/psychotherapy and education purposes. It is valuable in helping children, adolescents, and adults and can be provided for individuals, groups, and families.
AAPT has been defined as “the integrated involvement of animals in the context of play therapy, in which appropriately-trained therapists and animals engage with child, family, & adult clients primarily in play interventions aimed at improving the client’s psycho-social health, while simultaneously ensuring the animal’s well-being and voluntary engagement in the process. Play and playfulness are essential ingredients of the interactions & the relationship” (VanFleet, 2013).
